You flip the valve, press the igniter, and…nothing. A propane heater that won’t ignite is one of the most frustrating problems on a cold morning, but the good news is that the fix is almost always straightforward.

We’ve seen thousands of these cases across our product line, and in nearly every instance the root cause falls into one of four categories: a clogged pilot orifice, a dead igniter electrode, low gas pressure, or a safety lockout that’s doing exactly what it’s supposed to do. In this guide, we’ll walk you through each one step by step so you can get heat flowing again without calling a tech.

Check the Pilot Orifice First

The pilot orifice is a tiny brass fitting where gas exits to feed the pilot flame, and it’s also the single most common point of failure when a heater won’t light. Dust, spider webs, and debris smaller than a pencil lead can block the opening and starve the pilot of fuel.

Turn off the gas and remove the burner assembly—most models use two or three screws. Locate the pilot orifice at the end of the pilot supply tube and use a thin wire or the tip of a needle to clear the hole. Blow compressed air through the tube to dislodge anything deeper, then reassemble and test. If you see a weak yellow flame instead of a strong blue cone after cleaning, the orifice may be damaged and should be replaced.


Test the Igniter Electrode and Spark Gap

If the pilot orifice is clear but you still hear clicking with no ignition, the problem is usually electrical. The igniter electrode creates a spark that lights the gas, and if the gap between the electrode tip and the pilot hood is wrong—or if the ceramic insulator is cracked—you won’t get a consistent arc.

Press the igniter button in a dark room and watch for a visible blue spark jumping to the pilot hood. The gap should be about 1/8 inch; use a business card folded in half as a rough gauge. If the spark is weak or absent, check the battery compartment for corrosion or low voltage, then inspect the electrode wire for breaks. Models like our portable jobsite heaters use a piezo igniter that requires no battery, but the same gap and cleanliness rules apply.


Verify Gas Pressure and Supply

Even a clean orifice and working igniter can’t light a heater if gas isn’t reaching the burner at the right pressure. Start by confirming the propane tank valve is fully open—turn it counterclockwise until it stops, then back it off a quarter turn.

If you’re using a regulator between the tank and the heater, check for frost buildup or a stuck diaphragm by disconnecting and reconnecting the hose. A regulator that’s been stored in freezing temperatures can lock up temporarily; bringing it indoors for thirty minutes usually resolves it. Also check the tank itself: if the valve hisses when you crack it open but the heater still won’t light, the tank may be empty or the dip tube inside may be clogged with sediment.

Understand the Thermocouple Safety Lockout

Modern propane heaters use a thermocouple or thermopile to sense whether the pilot flame is actually burning. If the sensor doesn’t detect heat within about thirty seconds, it shuts off gas flow to prevent a dangerous leak. This is a feature, not a bug—but it also means a dirty or misaligned thermocouple will kill ignition even when everything else works perfectly.

The thermocouple is a thin metal rod positioned directly in the pilot flame; if it’s bent away from the flame path or coated in soot, it won’t heat up enough to hold the gas valve open. Clean the tip with fine sandpaper and gently bend it so the pilot flame wraps around the first half-inch of the probe. Hold the pilot button down for a full forty-five seconds on the first light after cleaning to give the sensor time to heat fully.

Understand the Thermocouple Safety Lockout

When to Replace vs. Repair

Most ignition failures are fixable with basic tools and a few minutes of troubleshooting, but some problems point to worn-out components that aren’t worth repairing. If the pilot orifice threads are stripped, the thermocouple probe is corroded through, or the gas valve itself is leaking, replacement parts are inexpensive and widely available—but at that point you’re also halfway to the cost of a new unit.

For heaters more than five years old with multiple failing components, replacing the entire unit often makes more sense than chasing down parts. Most Ignition Problems Are Simple Fixes

A propane heater that won’t ignite is frustrating, but in the vast majority of cases the problem comes down to a clogged orifice, a misaligned thermocouple, or a worn-out igniter—all of which you can diagnose and fix with basic tools in under an hour.

Start with the pilot orifice and thermocouple since those are the most common culprits, then move to the igniter and gas supply if cleaning doesn’t solve it. If you’ve worked through every step here and the heater still won’t light, the gas valve itself may be faulty, and at that point replacement is usually the smarter call than a repair.


Common Questions About Ignition Failures

This is almost always a thermocouple problem. The igniter is creating a spark and lighting the pilot, but the thermocouple sensor isn’t detecting enough heat to keep the gas valve open.

Clean the thermocouple tip with fine sandpaper and make sure it’s positioned directly in the pilot flame. You also need to hold the pilot button down for at least thirty to forty-five seconds after the flame lights to give the sensor time to heat up fully.

Technically yes, but we strongly recommend against it. The thermocouple is a safety device that prevents gas from flowing if the pilot goes out, and bypassing it creates a real risk of gas buildup.

Instead, test the thermocouple by heating the tip with a lighter while measuring voltage across the terminals with a multimeter. A working unit should produce at least 20-30 millivolts when hot.

For heaters used daily in dusty or outdoor environments, clean the pilot orifice at the start of each heating season. If you only use the heater occasionally, once a year is usually enough.

Spiders and insects are particularly drawn to the smell of propane and will nest in the burner assembly during warm months, so always inspect and clean before the first light of the season.

If you smell gas, turn off the supply immediately and ventilate the area. A gas odor without ignition means unburned propane is escaping, which is a serious hazard.

The most common cause is a failed igniter paired with an open gas valve—the valve is releasing gas but the spark isn’t lighting it. Do not attempt repeated ignition cycles if you smell gas; instead, wait five minutes for the gas to clear, then troubleshoot the igniter before trying again.

Cold temperatures thicken the lubricants inside the gas regulator and can also reduce battery voltage in electronic igniters. Both issues make ignition harder when it’s cold.

Store the propane tank and regulator indoors overnight before use, and replace igniter batteries at the start of each season. If the problem persists, the regulator may need replacement.

Repeated failed ignition attempts can flood the burner chamber with unburned gas, which creates a fire hazard and can also foul the pilot orifice further. After three or four failed attempts, stop and troubleshoot the root cause.

Never continue pressing the igniter if you smell raw propane or if the pilot won’t stay lit after releasing the button. Fix the underlying issue first.
